The Very Reverend Hugh Patrick Cassidy was a son of John Cassidy and Margaret Bartley. He attended Quigley Preparatory Seminary, St. Louis Preparatory Seminary, and Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis. Cassidy was ordained on 3 June 1945 in the Springfield diocese.

He served in the following capacities: Asst. Pastor at St. Peter's in Quincy and Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield; Pastor at Sacred Heart Church in Franklin in 1958, also serving St. Sebastian in Waverly and Holy Rosary in Palmyra; Director of the Rural Life Conference 1959-1970; Pastor of St. Margaret Mary's Church in Granite City 1969; Pastor of Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield 1970-1995; Dean of the Springfield Deanery; member of the Priests' Senate, serving two terms as president; administrator of Sacred Heart Parish; helped form a program for exceptional children; began the Thursday adoration of the Blessed Sacrament; served on the Ursuline Academy board; helped start lay advisory boards at Griffin High School, Ursuline Academy, Sacred Heart Academy, and Sacred Heart-Griffin High School; moderator of the Catholic High School Campaign; member of the Editorial Board of the Catholic Times, Calvary Cemetery Board, Ecumenical Commission of the Diocese; past president of Churches United Organization of Food Pantries; president of the Care Center of Springfield; and active in Friends of St. John's Bread Line.
