Just before Christmas 1893, Wilson suffered an injury which would cost him part of one leg. The following entries in the published diary of Robert Lincoln Barlow for December 1893 tell the story.
"20) Wednesday. Getting ready to go to Shed Jackson's sale. Wellington came down and said Wilson had shot his foot. The doctors came an took his foot off.
21) Thursday. Hauling wood. Wilson seems to be getting along very well.
22) Friday. Went to J. H. Wrinkle's sale. Clerked for P. B. Johnson. Sale amounted to $324..05. Came home by Elam's and got my gun. Wilson has some fever and seems to be suffering. The boys came in to fix up their Santa Claus.
23) Saturday. Went to Richland. Dr. Lee came in and said gangrene had set in Wilson's leg. Christmas tree at the schoolhouse tonight.
24) Sunday. Doctors came out and amputated part of Wilson's leg. He suffered considerably in the P. M. and fore part of the night, but rested better toward day.
25) Monday. Christmas Day: Chambers family here all day. Lucien Nickels stayed all night. Wilson seems to be resting better today.
26) Tuesday. Pleasant day. Lucien Nickels here most all day. Wilson is still improving.
27) Wednesday. Stayed with Wilson last night. He is getting along very well. Hauled a load of fodder. Rainy P.M. Ida, Carrie, and Florence came up to stay all night...
