James Ware Philp was the son of Thomas (emigrant from England via Canada) and Elizabeth (Baltzell) Philp.
He enlisted in the Thirty-second Illinois Volunteer Infantry in October, 1864, and was mustered out in June, 1865. He was taken prisoner at the battle of Bentonville, N.C., but was exchanged at Richmond nine days after being taken. He was a Republican in politics.
He married Augusta Jane "Nancy" (Kinne) Philp on 6 Apr 1856 in Jefferson Co., Illinois.
