Glen Basil Reed, 87, of St. George, Utah, formerly of Ammon, was born March 17, 1925, and passed away on his birthday, Saturday, March 17, 2012, in St. George.

He was the sixth child born to Arnold Campbell and Annie Melvina Judy Campbell. When he was 2 months old, his father left the family, not to be heard from again. When he was almost 5, his mother married Albert C. Reed. They, with his two children, became the Reed family.

Glen went to school in Lincoln, graduating from Ammon High School. He was proud to be on the school basketball team. He joined the Army, serving in the 802nd Tank Destroyer Battalion during World War II. He served for 27 months and was awarded two Purple Hearts.

On Feb. 10, 1947, Glen and Viola May Roberts drove his little red convertible to Dillon, Mont., and got married. They were sealed in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple on June 11, 1966. Viola passed away July 16, 2005.

Glen was a plumbing contractor, owning his own business, Reed Plumbing and Heating. He and Viola enjoyed traveling. In 1985, he and Viola built their home in St. George.

They served in the St. George LDS Temple. He was an inventor, having one patent. He will be remembered for his chili and peanut brittle. Glen was an active home teacher until the time of his death. He loved his ward and the good friends he had. His family is grateful to the many friends who watched over him.

He is survived by his children, Robert Glen Reed of Macks Inn, Idaho, Deborah Jo (Terry) Merrill of Ammon, James Kent (Nancy Hopkins) Reed of Palmer Lake, Colo., and Steven Brent Reed (Julie McFaddon) of Oregon City, Ore.; brothers, Lynn, F. David, Wesley, Lee and Ronald; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife; his parents; his sisters, Lola Barrett, Evelyn Smith, Vonnie Mortenson and Donna Benson; brothers, Arnold Reed and Verl Reed; and great-granddaughter, Cierra Ashley Burke.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, at Wood Funeral Home East Side, 963 S. Ammon Road. The family will visit with friends one hour before the services. Burial will be in Ammon Cemetery.
