Robert James Baker, 84, of Duluth, passed away in his home July 24, 2011, with his family at his side.

Bob was born Dec. 30, 1926, in Minneapolis, living there and in Golden, Colo., in his early years. When he was 10, the family moved to the North Shore of Lake Superior, residing in Grand Marais, Cascade River, Schroeder and Lutsen.

He attended school in Tofte and Grand Marais, and then moved to Duluth, where he spent most of his junior year at Denfeld.

In August of 1943, during World War II, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps at the age of 16. As part of L Company, 3rd Battalion, 23rd Marines, 4th Division, he fought in the Marshall Islands and on Saipan and Iwo Jima. He also served later in the Korean War.

Bob married Janet Lindstrom April 7, 1956, in Endion Methodist Church of Duluth.

He worked in the grain business at the Board of Trade until the Seaway opened in 1959, at which time he ventured into the shipping business to service the newly arriving ocean ships as well as the lakers. He was involved with the activity of the Duluth/Superior port until his retirement in 1992.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lucille and Lee; first wife Martha; and grandson Jason Robert Anderson.

Bob is dearly loved and missed by his wife of 55 years, Janet; son Gary Baker of Duluth and his children, Lane (John) Hovland of Duluth and Linsay (Mike) Tieden of Ham Lake, Minn.; daughter Claudia (David) Anderson of Stoughton, Wis., and their children, Jon (Yumi) Anderson of New York City and Kate (Luke) Dennis of Stoughton; daughter Kaarin Baker of Duluth, and her children, Kristin (Lee) Harju of Sturgeon Lake, Dustin Heaton of Moose Lake, and Taylin Johnson of Duluth; son Michael (Mary) Baker of Duluth and their children, Madelyn and Lauren Baker; daughter Kristen (Bill) Westin of Duluth and their children, Bayley, Hannah, Mackenzie, and Lexi Westin; son Steven (Sue) Baker of Duluth and their children, Sarah, Shannon, and Jackson Baker; son Scott (Sue) Baker of Duluth and their children, Robert, Alayna and Brendan Baker; daughter Katie (Bill) Donovan of Duluth and their children, Vanessa, Shay, Ryder, Boden, and Clara Donovan; sisters Judy Chipley of Ocilla, Ga., and Beverly (Mike) Churchill of Sarasota, Fla.; and 16 great-grandchildren, Seth, Jordan, Taylor, Alec and Gabriel Hovland, Grace, Sophia, Noah, and Annabella Tieden, Isabelle, Ava and Indiana Dennis, Clinton Able, Alyssa Harju, and Kyra and Ella Heaton.

Bob treasured the friendship and support of the Encouragers Bible Study Group as well as the pastoral staff and others at Lakeview Covenant Church.

Because of Bob's faith in Jesus Christ, we know our loss is his gain and that we will be reunited with him for eternity in God's due time.

Per Bob's request, a private family memorial service will be held at a later date.
