Evelyn Mardell “Evie” Bartlett, 88, of Waverly, died Thursday, Oct. 11, at Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community.
She was born Dec. 13, 1923, in Osage, daughter of Robert and Gladys Richsmann Greenlee. She married Kirk Bartlett. They later divorced.
She graduated from Shell Rock High School in 1941, and earned a Normal Training Certificate. She worked for the Shell Rock Post Office from 1942-1944, and taught at Hilltop School. She received a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from Wartburg College in 1975, taught junior high school for two years in Denver, and then taught second grade for 26 years, before retiring from the Denver School Systems in 1986. She was a member of Shell Rock United Methodist Church.
Survived by: two daughters, Kandyce (Roger) Sheldon of Denver and Jean (Eugene) Smith of Sioux Falls, S.D.; three grandchildren; a great-grandchild; and a brother, Robert Jr. (Sharane) Greenlee of Shell Rock.
Preceded in death by: five siblings, Clarence Greenlee, Delmar Greenlee, Phyllis Waddell, Nylene Luloff and Jerry Greenlee.
Services at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Heritage United Methodist Church, Waverly, with burial in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. Public visitation from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at the Funeral Home, Waverly.

Evie was born on December 13, 1923, in Osage, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Gladys (Richsmann) Greenlee. She attended rural school in Mitchell County, Iowa, near Pleasant Valley and St. Ansgar. In 1932 she moved southwest of Waverly, and attended Washington #6 Country School where she graduated from 8th grade, on the honor roll. Graduating from Shell Rock High School in 1941, she was again on the honor roll, and earned a Normal Training Certificate. She then worked for the Shell Rock Post Office from 1942 to 1944, until she began teaching at the Hilltop School. While teaching, she continued her education, graduating from Wartburg, with a Bachelor of Arts degree in elementary education, in 1975. Evelyn taught junior high school for two years in Denver, and then taught second grade for 26 years, before retiring from the Denver School Systems in 1986.
Evelyn was married to Kirk Bartlett. This union was blessed with two daughters, Kandyce R. and Jean Marie. The couple later divorced.
Evelyn was a member of the Shell Rock United Methodist Church for over 50 years. She was also an active participant in Heritage United Methodist Church. For enjoyment, Evelyn liked to travel. Alaska and the Bahamas were two of her favorite destinations. She also liked to read and paint ceramics.
She is survived by two daughters; Kandyce (Roger) Sheldon of Denver, Iowa and Jean (Eugene) Smith of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, three grandchildren; Nick Sheldon, Kate (Kirk) Sheeder and Kristi (Aaron Overstreet) Smith, one great grandchild; Carter Joseph Ergenbright, brother; Robert Jr. (Sharane) Greenlee of Shell Rock, sister-in-law; Joan Greenlee, brother-in-law; Dick Luloff, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She is preceded in death by her siblings; Clarence Greenlee, Delmar Greenlee, Phyllis Waddell, Nylene Luloff and Jerry Greenlee.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Heritage United Methodist Church in Waverly with Pastor John Brockschink officiating. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery, Shell Rock. Memorials may be made to Bartels Lutheran Retirement Community, Heritage United Methodist Church, Shell Rock United Methodist Church, or Denver Dollar for Scholars.
