Fr. John D. Furlong, of Pompano Beach, Fla., died at home in Janesville.
He was born in Hazel Green the son of Thomas E. and Lorena (Legler) Furlong. After attending Buncombe Rural Grade School in La Fayette County and Hazel Green High School in Grant County, Wis., Father Furlong attended the University of Wisconsin-Platteville and Jordan Seminary in Menominee, Mich. He studied philosophy and theology at Loras College, Dubuque, Iowa and earned a B.A. and Teacher's Certification at Iowa State, Ames, Iowa. Father Furlong was ordained by Bishop William P. O'Connor on May 28, 1966, at St. Raphael Cathedral, Madison. Father Furlong served the Diocese of Madison as Associate Pastor at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, Monona; St. Bernard Parish, Middleton; and Sacred Hearts of Jesus & Mary Parish, Sun Prairie; Associate Pastor Pro Tem. at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, Madison; and Pastor at St. Patrick Parish, Janesville from where he retired. During his years of service to the Diocese of Madison, Father Furlong also served on the Music Committee of Liturgical Commission; Director of the Marriage and Family Life Office; and instructor at Edgewood High School.
Fr. Furlong is survived by his siblings, and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, Mary Ilene Furlong, Robert Furlong, Lawrence Furlong, Elaine Barry, Lila Knautz, Helen Kilcoyne and Gerald Furlong.
