Nancy Ann was the daughter of Matthias Waggoner, Sr. and Nancy Ellen DeLong of Ohio. Little is known about her life prior to her marriage to Jacob Madison in 1843 except that she came from a large family and lived her early life in Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Her marriage to Jacob produced two daughters, but ended in tragedy when her husband went to town for supplies and never returned home. They were living in Gillead, Calhoun, Illinois at the time. Jacob is believed to have met with foul play or was killed by Indians in 1851 right after the birth of his second child in May of that year. Nancy was married to Jacob C. Grover in 1852 and four more children were born, but the last one did not survive. Nancy may have died from complications of childbirth as her demise came that same year at the age of 44. The 1860 Census shows that Jacob and Nancy were living in Liberty, Lucas, Iowa. A daughter, Eldora, was born there in 1858, so sometime after the birth of Minerva in 1855 they had made the move to Iowa. Nancy and Adrain may be buried in the same grave as there is no marker for little Adrain. Jacob would once again move his family to another county in Iowa after the death of his spouse and baby daughter.
