Preceded in death by his father, William Lloyd Smith; sister, Elizabeth Sanford Smith Jackson; and grandparents, Charles and Annie Lloyd Smith and James S. and Elizabeth Connolly. He is survived by his beloved wife, Cynthia Positan Smith; son, Justin Michael Smith and daughters, Julian Michelle Smith Broomes and Kaitlin Ariel Smith; mother, Betty Smith Demoney; brother, William Lloyd Smith, Jr.; and sisters, Rebecca Ann Smith Stapleton and Susan Smith West; as well as numerous nieces and nephews and many, many friends.
Mike attended Clinton Schools. He also attained the rank of Eagle Scout as a Boy Scout. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1972, served in the Vietnam Campaign aboard the U.S.S. Enterprise and was discharged in 1974. He was a member of the Navy Reserves from 1974 to 1978. From 1981 until his retirement in 1999, he served with distinction in the Army National Guard.
Mike retired as Director of Information Systems at the University of Mississippi in April 2006 after more than 32 years of service. At the time of his death, he was the Manager of Support/Infrastructure of the IT Department of Saint Dominic's Hospital.
