Six PUC Alumni Lost in Montana Plane Tragedy
March 24, 2009
On Sunday, March 22, 2009, Pacific Union College lost six alumni in a fatal airplane accident. The crash, which took place in Butte, Montana, claimed the lives of 14 people, seven of which were children under the age of ten.

Brent Ching ('93), Kristen Mautz Ching (att.'96-97), Erin Jacobson ('96), Amy Feldkamp Jacobson (att.'93-95), Michael Pullen (att.88-91), and Vanessa Feldkamp Pullen (att.'89-90) all attended PUC and went onto Loma Linda University. Close family friends, they often vacationed together. On this occasion, the friends were headed to a ski trip in Montana.

PUC President Richard Osborn said in a statement, "We are deeply saddened by this tragedy, and our prayers are with the victims' families. This is a very personal tragedy for Pacific Union College and our local community. All but one of the adults on board the plane graduated from or attended PUC, and there are many on our campus who remember them as students. Our alumni are also grieving this loss, as are many in the St. Helena and Angwin communities who knew and loved the Jacobson family."

There were three families lost in this accident: the Chings and their two children, Hailey, 5, and Caleb, 3; the Jacobsons and their three children, Taylor, 4, Ava 3, and Jude, 2; and the Pullens and their children, Sydney, 9, and Christopher, 7. Amy and Vanessa were sisters; a total of nine Feldkamp family members were onboard the plane.

Brent Ching, D.D.S., had a dental practice in Chico, California, and his family attended the Chico and Paradise Adventist Churches. His wife, Kristen, had a degree in nursing from Loma Linda University. "Brent, Kristen, Hailey, and Caleb loved being together in the great outdoors," said a representative from the Ching family. "They were always smiling and a joy to be around. To be with family and friends was so important in their lives. We will miss them greatly."

Out of Darkness, Light
A plane crash two years ago shocked the Ridge and left a hole in the hearts of two local families, who have since turned their tragedy into inspiration.

A remodeled science wing at Paradise Adventist Academy was dedicated in the name of the Ching family during the school's alumni weekend Saturday afternoon. Brent and Kristen Ching, and their children Hailey and Caleb, died when their plane crashed near Butte, Montana on March 22, 2009.

The pilot and two other families were also killed in the crash. At the dedication ceremony during alumni weekend, Kristen's father, Rick Mautz, spoke to the crowd and said thank you to those who donated funds in the memory of the Ching family. While the loss of his daughter and grandchildren was hard to take, Mautz said it was comforting to know that future students would learn science skills that would ultimately serve others.

Blue wrist bands were available to remind those who wore them to make a difference.

"We want all of you to make a difference for them," Mautz said.

The bands read "The Brent Ching Family," "Make a difference," and "PAA."

Mautz attended PAA from 1962 to 1968. He said the school only went to 10th grade at that time. Both Brent and Kristen also attended PAA. Brent was a dentist in Chico. Brent's father, Bob Ching, took to the podium and though he kept his composure, he was choked up.

"Thank you is all I can say," he said, before taking his seat.

Later, while visiting the science room, Ching said he appreciated the friends and family members who donated to make the remodel possible.... "It's nice to be able to honor the kids with something that expands the school and helps other people," Mautz said.

He said those who study science often go on to jobs such as medicine that ultimately benefit others. He said people were asked to donate to the school in lieu of sending flowers. The school's business manager, Don Perkins, said about $46,000 was donated in the name of the Ching family.

Mautz has since moved to Denver, Colo., to be closer to his son and new grandchild.
