Memorial services will be held Monday, March 5, 7:30 pm at Christ the King Catholic Church, Imperial at 32nd in San Diego for Steve Hardesty, who was 38 when he died of AIDS complications Feb 22, 1990 at his San Diego home. His ashes will be scattered at sea. Survivors include his life partner Roger Laferriere in San Diego, parents James and Delores Hardesty in Akron, Ohio and eleven brothers and sisters. Donations in his memory to Dignity-San Diego are suggested.

Born in Akron, Hardesty graduated from Archbishop Hoban High School there in 1969. Enlisting in the US Navy, he spent his tour of duty on the floating drydock LSD Mt. Vernon, home based in San Diego. Following discharge he enrolled at San Diego State University as an art history major and spent his senior year at their campus in Florence, Italy. After returning to San Diego he was employed at First Capital Life Insurance Co. in their graphic arts dept.

A prolific artist, Hardesty painted in the impressionistic and cubist stryle, with subjects ranging from landscapes to religious themes, He also had an extensive stamp collection and had done volunteer clerical work on the SD Walks for Life 1988 event.

Hardesty and Laferriere were joined in holy union July 12, 1987 in a ceremony arranged through Dignity and held at a private home. Both members of Christ the King Catholic Church, their photo as a couple appears in the parish's 50th Anniversary yearbook.

Son of James Merlin Hardesty and Delores Eileen Selman, Stephen was a dedicated member of Dignity/San Diego, chapter of the Catholic LGBT organization DignityUSA.

Stephen Hardesty and Roger Laferriere were joined in Holy Union on July 12, 1987. The Mass was concelebrated by Michael Scott and Jack Shuk. Community witnesses were Stanley Lewis and Alfred Schulz. Readers were Michael Burns and Patrick McArron.

Stephen died at home with Roger at his side. Cause of death: AIDS.

Stephen was survived by his parents, James Merlin and Delores Hardesty of Jacksonville, N.C.; sisters and brothers, Angela DeWitt and Ernie of Toccoa, Michael Hardesty and Darla of Duluth, Minn., Daniel Hardesty and Theresa of Stella, N.C., Thomas Hardesty and Michele of Zenia, Ohio, Victoria Hardesty Barden of Barberton, Ohio, Jeannie McCombs and Tommy of Leeds, Ala., Gerald Hardesty and Della of Zanesville, Ohio, Mary Morgan and Dave of Homeworth, Ohio, John Joseph Hardesty and Diana of Lebec, Calif., and Cathy Jo Pier and Michael of Columbus Township, Mich.; Christopher Hardesty; and a host of nieces and nephews. Stephen is also survived by his life partner, Roger Laferriere of San Diego.
