His first enlistment was on 26 May 1914, at Ft Snelling, MN. He was promoted to Sergeant on 7 Jul 1919.
The 31st Infantry was sent to Vladivostok, Siberia on 21 Aug 1918. Originally, the regiment was sent to protect war materials from being looted, but later fought "Red revolutionaries" who were seeking to take control of the Trans-Siberian railroad.
The 31st Infantry became known as the "Polar Bear" regiment and adopted the image of a silver polar bear as its unit emblem.
He re-enlisted for one year on 1 Jul 1919 - in Siberia. He was promoted to Sergeant 1st Class on 17 Nov 1919. The regiment departed Siberia in Apr 1920 and took up residence at Fort McKinley in the Philippines. He was honorably discharged at Ft Miels, Corregidor, Philippines, on 3 Mar 1921.
He apparently re-enlisted and continued to serve until 1944, when he retired after 30 years of service. His rank was Master Sergeant at retirement.
He also served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Officer Reserve Corps; it is not known if he served on active duty as an officer.
