Julia was the daughter of Thomas Wilson Finerty and Mary Ann Parker. It is said that Julia was quiet, timid and easy going. The Finerty family claims that her mother Mary Ann was 1/4 Cherokee Indian. Permission for her to marry Cyrus Clinton Smith was given by Green and Mary Hill.

After the death of her first husband, Julia married her step-brother James Hill.
