Samuel's desire for wealth and prestige led him to California during the national obsession with the Gold Rush. The distance caused significant marital strife. Following the 1848 death of his wife, he stayed in or near Solano, California, until the early 1850s. He returned to Geneva, but his children were ultimately raised by relatives. In both NYS and US Census returns he was thereafter listed as a "gentleman." In modern parlance, it's a fancy way of saying Samuel was without any profession but seemed to possess enough wealth to live comfortably with a housekeeper.
