Ray Matson was the son of Gerald Matson and Estella Helstrom. He was born and raised in Sioux City, Iowa. He was a Radioman 1st Class in the U.S. Navy serving from February 5, 1952 until his retirement on March 12 1971. He was a veteran of both the Korean and Vietnam Wars.He retired from the Navy and moved with his family to Florida.
