Howard E. Burress, age 95, passed away on Thursday, March 22, 2012. Howard was born on March 23, 1916 in Hutchinson, KS. Howard is survived by his wife, Doris Cross Burress, daughters, Jeanne and Barbara; sons, Bill and Paul; step-sons, Brian, Warren, and Kevin Cross and 13 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. Howard was preceded in death by his first wife, Eleanor McCraney Burress, his father, Walter Edward Burress and his mother, Hulda Arizona Burress. Howard attended Colorado State College of Education (now Northern Colorado College) and Williams College of Mortuary Science. Howard began his mortuary career in Boulder, CO,and later establishing mortuaries in De Norte, Saguache, and Walsenbury, CO before coming to Albuquerque in 1959 to become a partner in Strong-Throne Mortuary. Howard retired in 1972. His association with Rotary International began in Del Norte, CO in 1938, continued to Walsenburg, CO, serving as District Governor of the Rotary clubs of Southern Colorado and Northern New Mexico from 1958 to 1959. New Mexico activities have included leading a Rotary Group Study Exchange group to India in 1980. As an honorary member of the Rotary club of Albuquerque,, he helped established the Rotary Club of Rio Rancho in 1974, and the Rotary Clubs of Albuquerque Del Norte in 1988, Albuquerque Del Sol in 1997, and Albuquerque Rio Grande in 2001. Howard established a Rotary Memorial Tree planting program in 1974 which has continued throughout New Mexico and West Texas. A contributor to the Rotary Foundation for International Peace and Understanding he is a Paul Harris Fellow and Benefactor. Other associations include the Masonic Lodge, Meals on Wheels, The Knife and Fork Club and years of service to The Storehouse. Services will be held on Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at French, Westside Chapel, with burial to follow in Del Norte, CO at Del Norte Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to the Storehouse, 106 Broadway, SE, ABQ, NM 87102 or to a charity of your choice.
