Parents: Col. John Catlett, Sr. and his first wife Miss Lucas.

In 1661 Thomas Catlett witnessed a deed made in Essex Co., VA, by his father John, and step-mother, Elizabeth Catlett. From Land Books at Richmond, VA, Thomas owned 1,000 acres in Spotsylvania Co., VA--Bk. XII, pg. 308. Thomas transferred this land to Francis Conway, gent. on Nov. 7, 1727, for 60 pounds. Francis Conway then transferred this land on the same date to John Taliaferro of Spotsylvania Co., VA. Thomas owned much land in Spotsylvania, & Caroline Counties.

Maj. Thomas Catlett was a Sheriff of Essex Co., VA.

The parentage of Nicholas and Thomas Catlett--as sons of John Catlett, d. 1670, and a first wife who died in England--has been questioned. According to the noted genealogist, Margaret Amundson, John did not have an earlier marriage with sons Nicholas and Thomas. "The fact that John's son John [d. 1724] owned the land entailed in the will of John [d. 1670] back in England proves Nicholas was not his son. Nicholas was a name used broadly in the Catlett family in Kent, England. And no doubt he was related to John [d. 1670] who used him as a headright. But unless someone can produce a marriage record for John [d.1670] in England and explain why John [d. 1724] had the cherry gardens in England instead of Nicholas I am afraid Nicholas was not John's son."
