Weldon was primarily a farmer his adult life. If it wasn't planting or harvest time he also helped out my grandfather at the Keen-Norris Hardware Store in Fairfield. In addition to the usual chickens, pigs and cows, he also raised peafowl on his farm.

As a small boy he lost all 4 of his right-hand fingers when he got too close to an orchard cider press and got his hand caught in the machinery. He was self-conscious of the injury, and in every photograph of him for the rest of his life he always covered up his right hand.
