Glenn E. Barnes, 82, died following the explosion of both the car and snowblower batteries about 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. He staggered out of his garage, where the explosion occurred and collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene., Fillmore County Coroner, Dr. R. Kalidinidi.
According to Barnes' wife Cora, he attempted to jump start a garden tractor snow blower by using jumper cables attached to his 1982 car. Fillmore County Sheriff Don Gudmundson said both batteries apparently exploded, creating a ball of flames. His wife said she saw him run out of the garage and she attempted to extinguish the flames with her hands and a broom. Barnes fell to the ground and she called an ambulance. Gudmundson said authorities are not sure what caused the explosion.
Glenn Barnes was born February 18, 1901, in Winneshiek County, Iowa to Rupert and Luna (Benson) Barnes.
He and Helma Brokken were married in April of 1926 in Winneshiek County, she died in 1946.
On February 18, 1952 he married Cora Trones.
Barnes farmed north of Harmony until 1962.
He was a member of United Methodist Church in Harmony.
Survivors include his wife; a step-son, Alden Trones of Rochester, Minnesota; a step-daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Lillian) Anderson of Whitehall, Wis.; seven step-grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. Merlin (Edna) Steen, Albert Lea, Minnesota, Mrs. Francis (Mildred) Delgardelle and Mrs. Vern (Alta) Daman, both Waterloo, Iowa.
Two infant sons, two brothers and two sisters have preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 14, in the Harmony Methodist Church in Harmony, with the Rev. Margery Lisle officiating. Burial was in the State Line Cemetery. Abraham-Lindstrom Funeral Home of Harmony was in charge of arrangements.
