Obituary of Luna Eliza Barnes

Luna Eliza (Benson) Barnes, daughter of John and Harriett (Smith) Benson, was born Sept. 20th 1870 and passed away at the Harmony Community Hospital August 2, 1951 at 5:30 A.M. at the age of 80 years 10 months and 13 days.

On April 19, 1893 she was united in marriage to Rupert R. Barnes and to this union nine children were born one dying in infancy.

She was born on what is now the Judd Benson farm where she grew to womanhood. She taught school in the rural schools of Fillmore County, Minnesota.

After their marriage they resided in Harmony until the fall of 1900 moving to the farm in Winneshiek Co., Iowa which has been their home since.

She was a kind and loving wife and mother and will be sadly missed by her family.

She is survived by her husband, five daughters and three sons: (Ethel) Mrs. Wesley Keune of Cresco, Iowa; Claude at home; (Hattie) Mrs. Ole Brokken of Harmony; Glenn of Harmony; Lester of Decorah, Iowa; (Mildred) Mrs. Archie Olson of Waterloo, Iowa; (Alta) Mrs. Verne Damon of Cresco and (Edna) Mrs. Merlin Steen of Harmony. One brother, Judd Benson of Harmony, one sister (Myrtle) Mrs. Edd Easler of Cresco, Iowa, fifteen grandchildren and six great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Frank, Emmett and Ed. Benson and one sister (Clara) Mrs. Herman Serfling.

On January 30th she suffered a stroke and on February 22nd she was taken to the hospital where all that loving hands could do was done for her.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon August 5th at 2 o'clock from the house and 2:30 at the Harmony Methodist Church and she was laid to rest in the State Line Cemetery, Rev. Clare W. Karsten officiating.

Mr. and Mrs. Ray Griebenow sang three of Mrs. Barnes favoriet hyms "Saved by Grace", "Shall We Gather at the River" and "In the Garden".

The pallbearers where her three sons and three sons-in-law, Claude, Glenn, and Lester Barnes, Merlin Steen, Verne Damon and Ole Brokken.
A precious one from us is gone,
A voice we loved is stilled,
A place is vacant in our homes
Which can never be filled.
She is peacefully sleeping, resting
In silence she suffered in patience
she bore
Till God called her to eternal
rest to suffer no more.
