Althea May Fletcher Beals was born September 5th, 1922 in Marlborough, Massachusetts and passed on July 13, 2015 at her daughter Barbara's home in Bow, Washington.

In 1942 Althea and Fred were married in Boston, Massachusetts. In the early 1950's, Althea's parents Ralph and Laura Fletcher, her brothers, Varnum and Ralph, sisters, Jean, Myrtle, Alda and Fanny, moved their families to Washington State. In 1953, Althea, husband Fred and their children, Walter (Rusty), Paul and Barbara also relocated to western Washington. In 1960 and 1962 they added two more children, Katherine and Jeffrey to their family, then living in Alderwood Manor, moving to Stanwood in 1970 and Bow in 2006.

Early in life, Althea survived several bouts of rheumatic fever and in spite of not being able to finish schooling past the 8th grade she went on to become an accomplished seamstress and quilter, a cook of considerable renown, a loving parent to her five children and a contributing partner to her husband during their 69 years of marriage. In 1968 she and Fred purchased the Silvana Cold Storage and built a reputable family business still in operation today.

The opportunity to travel was embraced after retirement and Althea loved that she was able to travel around the world with her sister Myrtle and their husbands, and to Alaska to visit her son Paul. There were many years spent RVing around the United States eventually wintering in Arizona where she and Fred established a home at Sun Vista Resorts in Yuma. There they enjoyed warm weather and tremendous relationships.

Althea was proud of her children's accomplishments. She was always ready to help in daughter Katherine's catering business, making sure baked goods like her famous rum cakes were always in production, and there's no question of her influence on Walter and Em's business, the 5B's Bakery in Concrete. Nana was a quiet and steadfast presence in all things family and whose love can be seen and felt in the handmade quilts crafted for each of us. She was brightened by every visit from her grandchildren and loved to laugh with them. Each year she packed a lot of summer into canning jars of vegetables and preserves, and although Fred was famous for his incredible smoked salmon she quietly confided to her children that 'the recipe was really mine.' She found tremendous joy in the bright colored flowers and beautiful songbirds surrounding her these final years on the Leander farm.

Althea was preceded in death by her son Jeffrey, grandson Jason Beals, husband Fred and son-in-law Mark Leander.

Althea is survived by sons Walter (Mari) Beals of Concrete; Paul (Tima) Beals of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughters Barbara Leander of Bow; Katherine (Jack) Turner of Lake Stevens; grandchildren USMC Sgt Matthew Leonard, Aaron Leonard and USMC Corporal Scott (Selena) Viboch; Jacob Leander, Bellingham; Kelsie Leander, Bellevue; Jeff Leander, Mt Vernon; and Jason (Carole) Leander with great-granddaughter Stella, LaConner; Drew Beals, LaConner; and Elizabeth, Bowen and Tavish Beals, Concrete; brother Ralph (Sherril) Fletcher and many nieces and nephews. Althea was blessed with many special relationships in her life, including Dave (Joan) Anderson of Arlington; and her good friend and caregiver Claudia Buck.

A celebration of Nana's life will be held at the Leander Farm in Bow on Sunday, July 19, 2015 from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
