On Jan. 12, 1949, she married Valleau "Joe" Spaulding in Oakland, Calif. He died May 19, 2002.
Survivors are: sons, Tom Spaulding and his wife, Brenda, of Ravenna and Pete Spaulding and his wife, Diane, of Campbell and two grandsons they raised, Travis Spaulding and fiancée, Shelly, and Todd Spaulding and his wife, Diane, all of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; brother, Don Smith and his wife, Barb, of Elm Creek; and sister, Jean Lammers of Kearney.
Benita was a nurse for 40 years. She retired from Franklin Medical Clinic in 2000 and moved to Ravenna.
Benita enjoyed the little things in life, spending time with her family, music and watching Chicago Cubs baseball.
Benita was known most for her loving and nurturing heart. "Nan" was a blessing to the lives of all she touched with her generosity and giving spirit.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Steve Smith and Gary Spaulding; daughter, Reava Spaulding; sister, Jackie Maxiner; and her parents.
Graveside services were at Riverside Cemetery, Gibbon, NE.
