My grandmother was born in a small village in Poland near Tarnow. Her family sent her to the USA in 1919 to marry some guy. She met him and said that on second thought she would just pay her own boat fare. She worked in a restaurant making salads while she was learing English and then got a job at Western Electric. She married my grandfather, Leo Pinkos, in 1921. THey opened a tavern after prohibition ended. She used to tell a great story about some bootleggers renting an apartment from her, and teh police comming in and the bootleggers running down the back stairs into her apartment with all this booze and running back up the front stairs to their own apartment as the police ran down the alley. She also told a story about being arrested for being a bookie. She sort of retired in 1972 and moved to Berwyn in 1974 she moved in with us shortly before my father passed away. She had 3 daughters Leona, Irene and Alice and 6 grandchildren.
