My Aunt Irene was a very serious Chicago Cubs fan, she also led an amazing life. She left home and became a Harvey Girl (Fred Harvey Restaurants used to be all over the country. You could get a job in one and move to other locations) around 1939 and traveled the country. During this time I believe she met my Uncle Jimmy who was in the Army Air Air Corps.
When I was young she traveled everywhere, Bali, Iran, Lebanon, South Africa, Ireland.... you name it she probably went there. She always sent a few post cards and brouight back a toy from Bali or Jamaca or somewhere. I think she loved Paris the most. She wanted very much to be in Paris for the Millenium, but could not make the trip because of ill health.
She was an incredible cook! She actually made puff pastry, something I would never bother doing, as it is a real albor of love. Collector of antique glassware, books, china. Always something interesting to see or talk about with her. She loved poetry and singing. She was a joy to be around. She never forgot a friend and was always there to help anyone. She did volunteer work for the VA and for Air Force Sergents Asscoc and was a volunteer Polish Translator for teh Chicago Police. Wonderful lady really. I think that my aunt is the one who got us to eat other ethnic foods. I think we may have been the first people on the block to have Chinese food. And that time we went out for Chinese Pizza (think pizza with like shitakes and 5 spice.... and some other stuff, it was good and there was a piano and a woman who sang) it was SO COLD out and my sisters car got towed cause she didn't see the lincoln towing sign. What a fun night, aside from the towing bit.
