Link was a slender glass lizard that I rescued from the street in one of the many sprawling housing developments of Tampa, where he'd become trapped and exposed to pesticides and was in danger of being run over by a car. We bonded a great deal in the short time I had him, but in the end he was already too sick to save. He died of an intestinal blockage and infection two days after I brought him home. He waited to die in my hands, just minutes after I came home from taking my last final exam at college.

Link was a gentle, curious, and good-natured animal who never tried to bite anyone and liked to spend his time curled around my fingers. He was 16" long and approximately two years old.

He was set adrift on the Hillsborough River.
