Nelson Gates
Nelson Gates was born at Bristol, Wis., March 28, 1846, and died Jan 22, 1911, being 64 years, nine months, and twenty-four days old. Mr. Gates passed away at his farm home, two miles west of Hebron, from a complication of diseases, resulting in heart failure. When a young man of eighteen years, he enlisted in the army, entered Sept 24 1864, enduring hardships which affected his health during the remainder of his life. May 18 1871, he was married to Melissa Brush and settled in the town of Hebron and in about a year bought the present farm that he owned when he died.
From this union five children were born, four of whom survive, Frank and Chas. Gates of Downers Grove, and Clyde and Clarence Gates of Hebron. Mrs. Gates died March 13, 1893. Dec 13, 1894 he was married a second time to Mrs. Emma Parnahan of Buffalo N.Y. She with her daughter, Mrs. Henry Greely, of Richmond and the surviving sons mourn the loss of a dear husband and a kind father.
Funeral services were conducted from the town residence Wednesday forenoon, the G.A.R. taking charge of the service. Rev. Fraser, pastor of the Presbyterian church, preached the sermon, the body being laid to rest in the Linn-Hebron cemetery.
