Navy Veteran Served On Presidential Yacht; Was Former Auto Dealer
Bobby Lewis (Bob) May, age 75, of 137 Riptide Circle, N. Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, formerly of Clifton Forge and Covington, died Thursday, July 16, 2009 at the Grand Strand Regional Medical Center in Myrtle Beach.

Born June 25, 1934 in Alleghany County, Virginia, Bob was a son of the late Elmer Lewis May and Dorothy Martin May.

He retired in 1971 after twenty-six years as First Class Chief Petty Officer in the United States Navy, having served on the Presidential yacht, the U. S. S. Sequoia with President Richard M. Nixon.

Bob was the owner/operator of the former Bob May Auto Sales in Clifton Forge, from which he had also retired.

He was a member of the Covington Masonic Lodge # 171 A.F. & A.M., Kazim Shriners, and the Clifton Forge Shrine Club. He was also a member of the Clifton Forge Elks Club and the Clifton Forge Lions Club.

He had a great love for his boats and the ocean.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret "Peggy" Freels May in 1999; a brother, Delbert Ray May in 1998; and a sister, Maxine Schnarwyler in 2006; and a step brother Bobby Vest.

He is survived by a daughter, Christy Shaffer of Clifton Forge and special friend, Sammy Taylor of Covington; a son, David May and wife, Rhoda of Tennessee; two step-brothers, Douglas Vest and Eugene Vest, both of Covington; three grandchildren, Alex Shaffer, Hailey Shaffer, and Jeremy May; a great grandson, Kilian May; a special mother-in-law, Lucille Freels of Rich Patch; and a very special friend, Cheryl Gonzonalez of Myrtle Beach.

A memorial service will be conducted on Thursday evening at 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend W. Pembroke Hall officiating. Entombment of remains will be made at a later date at Alleghany Memorial Park, Low Moor.

The family will receive friends two hours prior to the service from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at Nicely Funeral Home or other times at the home of Sammy Taylor, 309 Foxaway Lane, Covington. The family suggests memorial tributes take the form of contributions to the Shriners Hospitals for Children, Special Burn Center, 3229 Burnet Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45229-3095.

Arrangements are being handled by the Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge, Virginia.
