Alfred J. "Fred" Provencher, of West Long Branch, passed away peacefully Friday morning, Feb. 10, 2012, with his family by his side at home.

He was born October 1, 1928 in North Adams, Massachusetts the second son of Frank B and Anna Provencher. He grew up in North Adams and after high school he joined the U.S. Army. Most of his tour of duty was in occupied Japan in 1947. After his honorable discharge from the service he attended Vesper George Art School in Boston, then a year at the Art Institute of Chicago and finished his bachelor's degree in Art from Syracuse University in 1953. He attended the Boston Architectural Center for a year before beginning a career in teaching. He taught art in grades 1-12 in public schools in Massachusetts and New York for eight years. After completing his Master's Degree in Art Education he accepted a teaching position at Monmouth University.

Fred was an Associate Professor and Chairman of the department at Monmouth University for 29 years, retiring in 1994. He was an avid painter during his lifetime exhibiting his work in New York and New Jersey, and an avid Boston Red Sox fan. He was a loving husband and devoted father.

He was predeceased by his parents, brother Frank, sister Claire Dean and sister Annemarie Mastroianni.

Surviving is his wife of 57 years, Marcella "Jean" Walsh Provencher, his four children, daughter Denise Provencher and her husband Dennis Wilmot, daughter Annette and her husband Bob Dorobis, son Fred and his wife Debbie and daughter Amie and her husband James Schiffner; eight grandchildren, Blake Wilmot, Mariette, Jeanann and Brian Dorobis, and Alyssa, Justin, Emily and Abigail Provencher. He is also survived by two sisters, Joan Sindermann and her husband Jim, and Cecile Schneider as well as many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Monday, Feb. 13th, 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM at the Woolley Funeral Home, 10 Morrell Street, Long Branch. Funeral services will be Tuesday Feb. 14th, 11:00 AM at Old First United Methodist Church, Locust Ave., West Long Branch. Interment will follow at Glenwood Cemetery, West Long Branch.
