Civil War: Company A, 6th Wisconsin Infantry "Iron Brigade"

John A. Coughran was born in Vermont in 1826, both of his parents were born in Ireland. His family later moved to Caledonia in Racine County, Wisconsin (1850 US Census). He married Mary J. Reed in Grant County, Wisconsin, on December 17, 1857, and settled at Reedsburg in Sauk County, where their daughter was born in 1859 (1860 US Census). He was still a resident at Reedsburg when he enlisted as a private for 3 years on May 10, 1861. He was mustered into Company A, 6th Wisconsin Infantry, at Camp Randall (Madison), Wisconsin, on July 16, 1861. He was discharged to accept a commission to 2nd lieutenant October 25, 1861. He was promoted to 1st Lieutenant September 23, 1862. He resigned his commission on December 3, 1862, and returned to his family at Reedsburg. He then moved to Peninsula in Grand Traverse County, Michigan (1870 US Census). He was divorced by 1880 and Mary and their daughter moved to Empire, Leelanau, Michigan (1880 US Census). John moved to Arkansas, where he filed for a Civil War veteran disability pension on April 9, 1881, and received certificate No. 466,351 (Pension File, NARA). He was a "widower" living in San Diego in 1900 (1900 US Census). After his death in 1903 a veteran headstone was ordered and installed on his grave, but it is no longer present.
