On 9 Jan 1887, married Mary Ellen Friend, his first cousin two times removed (John Jeremiah Lish was the grandson of Josiah Green Friend. Josiah Green Friend was the uncle of Mary Ellen's father, Joab Jonah Friend). To this union four children:
1. Bertha Lish: b. 12 Mar 1888; d. 18 Jul 1971
2. William Franz Lish: b. 7 May 1889; d. 16 Jan 1891
3. Hubert Lish: b. 2 Sep 1892; d. 14 Sep 1968
4. Charles Ronald Lish: b. 13 Feb 1899; d. 11 Dec 1969
John was a well-known carpenter in the Friendsville area.

Funeral services for the late John J. Lish whose death occurred at his home in Friendsville, were conducted at the Blooming Rose Church by Rev. J. F. Hockenberry, pastor of the M. E. Church in Friendsville. Mr. Lish was born April 16, 1865, and died September 18, 1938.
In the year 1887 he was united in marriage to Mary E. Friend to which union the following children were born: Bertha Lish Anderson, Akron, Ohio; Hubert Lish and Ronald Lish at home. In addition to the immediate family, he is survived by one brother, Smith Lish of Loch Lynn, Md. and one sister Lilly Reed, of Confluence, Pa. Also, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
