Stephen was a brakeman with the Central Railroad of New Jersey. He was a veteran of World War I, and his death was due to the effects of inhaling poision gas during the Argonne offensive during the war. He served with Company F 181 Infantry which was in the van of the victorious American doughboys that pushed the Run our of Argonne. In the pursuit Bridgland inhaled mustard gas. Instead of stopping for aid he rushed on with his comrades until exhausted and overcome with the fumes. He was removed to a hospital behind the linkes and later to a French hospital. The deadly gas fastened itself upon the vitality of the young hero and his strength ebbed. He was a member of the Brotherhood of Trainmen.
