4th Great Grandfather

Lawrence James Swope (Swoope). This is a "replacement" stone. The original stone may have been spelled SWOPE, or even the old German spelling SCHWOBE that was commonly used by his immediate family. Future generations of this family spelled their name with both a single O and a double O, which was a personal choice.

Birth 1742 in Leacock, Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

Death 16 Aug 1794 in Trough Creek Valley, Union, Huntingdon, Pennsylvania, USA.

His father immigrated in 1720 from Leimen, Rhein-Neckar-Kreis, Baden-Wuerttemberg, Germany and married his second wife, Lawrence's mother, Catharine Elizabeth Graff (Grove) in 1742 the same year Lawrence was born.

His father immigrated from Germany with his father and brothers and they settled in Lancaster County. He was asked escort Anna's mother back to Huntingdon County after she was visiting Lancaster Coutny. He met her daughter, Anna Grove, fell in love, and stayed.

He married Anna Grove b. 1749 – d. 1800. They had the following children:

John Walter Swope I 1764 – 1819 married Temperance Stevens
Catherine Swope 1767 – ?
Elizabeth Swope 1769 – ? married John Keyes
Mary Swope 1770 – 1839 married John Saylor
David Swope 1771 – 1826 married Mary Cole
Lawrence James Swope Jr. 1775 – 1844 married Sarah Greenland
Susannah Swope 1777 – ?
Caleb Swope 1780 – ?
Rachel Swope 1779 –

I am Johannes Jost Swope's great-great-great-great-grand daughter.

I don't believe Lawrence is a son of Johannes Jost Schwob.

There were 3 other brothers that emigrated in 1720 with Yost. He may be one of their sons. My genealogical documents only address Johannes Jost so I could not tell you which of the other brothers Lawrence may be related to. But he is not mentioned as one of the 9 children of Johannes and Elizabeth Groff/Grove/Graeff
Contributor: Stephanie Swope (50889787)

My research contradicts Stephanie Swope's findings. Until two primary source documents are provided to prove he was not the son of Jost Swope, my research stands. There is a lot of documentation available at the Huntingdon Historical Society that is not available online.

Further evidence that Lawrence is not the son of Johannes Yost, son of Yost Schwab/Swope.

1. Why would Lawrence be the only son of Johannes Yost Schwab for whom there is not an exact date of birth? Every other child's birthdate is known with both of Johannes's wives. Why would Lawrence be the only exception?

2. Who was Lawrence's mother?
~It is stated that Lawrence was born in 1742. At the time of Lawrence's conception (which would HAVE to have been no later than June of 1741), Johannes Yost was still in mourning for the loss of his first wife, Anna Dorothea Lein Schwab (Swope), who passed in December 1740 after a stillbirth.
~Johannes did not marry his second wife Catharine Elizabeth Groff/Greve until May 25, 1742. Lawrence would have to have been born before their marriage IF Catharine was his mother. Why? Because Maria Juliana Schwab/Swope Zwecker was conceived in June of 1742, almost immediately after Johann and Catharine's wedding on May 25, 1742 and she was born 3/17/1743.

3. If Lawrence is a son of Johann Yost Schwab, why is he not mentioned in Johann's will along with all the other male children?

Lawrence James Swope, Sr is my Great x 4 Grandfather. I concur that he is almost certainly not the son of Johannes Jost Schwabe (John Swope) and Catherine Elizabeth Groff, as noted above (and for the same reasons). However, my research suggests that the following is much more likely, which possible where the confusion is arising:

1. Lawrence is most likely the great grandson of Yost Conrad Schwab by way of his eldest son Hans Jorg Schwab (b. 1682, d. 1756, and who emigrated to PA later in 1727 with his wife and five children on the "William and Sarah") and his youngest son Johann Jost (Joseph Swope) Schwab (b. 1724, d. between 1752-1756, married Anna Maria Becker). The similarity of the names (Johannes Jost Schwab / John Swope [son of Yost Conrad Schwab) and Johann Jost Schwab / Joseph Swope (son of Hans Jorg Schwab and grandson of Yost Conrad Schwab) may inevitably be causing some confusion. I have not found a birth certificate, as very little information is available for this line of the family due to the lack of early church records given the primitiveness of the German Reformed churches at that time.

2. The probate documents of Lawrence Swope's estate (I have these) indicate that he died in Philadelphia in October of 1793 during the yellow fever pandemic that struck the city that year. We also know from these documents that his father-in-law was Jacob Fite, so his wife (Anna's) maiden name was almost certainly Fite and not Grove. The pandemic killed Lawrence, his wife, his mother, and two children. His mother-in-law also died shortly after, likely because she accompanied her husband in October 1793 to take the children to the Maurice River area of New Jersey. Lawrence's older children (including my Great x 3 Grandfather John Walter Swope, were already out of the house and living on the Swope farm(s) in Huntingdon, Co. But Lawrence was definitely living in Philadelphia in 1793, as demonstrated in the septennial census records. He was paying taxes on multiple properties in Philly and in Huntingdon, Co.

3. The widow "Mary Swope" is also documented as living in the same part of Philadelphia as Lawrence Swope in 1793. I believe this could be Anna Maria (Mary) Swope (born Becker), wife of Joseph Swope. We know Joseph was alive in 1752, but listed as deceased in his father's (Hans Jorg Schwab / George Swope) will in 1756. So his wife "Mary" would have been a widow at that point. The probate documents do not list the name of "Swope's old mother", just that she was also ill and died shortly after Lawrence and his wife in 1793.

Lawrence Swope will continue to be a mystery man in the Swope lineage until we are able to find hard documentation as to his parentage, which may never happen. But I believe I have eliminated every other reasonable explanation for his parentage, including that he was born to Yost's other two male children, Johannes or Hans Ulrich. The only way the puzzle pieces all fit is that he was the grandson of Hans Jorg Schwab by way of his youngest child Johann Jost Schwab / Joseph Swope. Otherwise, Lawrence Swope comes from a completely different Schwab / Schwob family that no researchers have ever identified, which I believe is highly unlikely given the lack of any evidence of a separate group of emigrants that adopted the Swope name. Note that he is not a descendant of Jacob Schwob, who emigrated from Switzerland in 1749 as that line of "Swopes" has also been carefully documented.

Hope that helps! Please feel free to contact me ([email protected]) if you want to discuss or have further information that we can share. I would be happy to provide you with what I have found.
