San Francisco area socialite and attorney. In 1883 he and his wife Minnie Mizner Chase (sister of architect Addison Mizner of Florida) founded the Stags' Leap Winery in the Napa Valley. Stags' Leap became a center of social life who traveled from San Francisco by ferry and then boarded a train to Yountville and the journey was finished by carriage. The Chase's had built a beautiful manor house and guest house that still stand, made wine storage caves and installed what is thought to be the first in-ground fresh-water swimming pool in Northern California. The estate was acquired by Mrs. Frances Grange in 1913 and the property was transformed into a working ranch and one of Napa Valley's preeminent resorts. Not to be confused with Stag's Leap Winery (see wine label).
