WEST COLUMBIA -- Services for Diane B. Thornton, 66, of West Columbia, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, April 27, 2007 at Brookland United Methodist Church. Officiating will be Rev. Robert Cannon and Rev. Carol Cannon. Burial will follow in Celestial Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Thompson Funeral Home of Lexington. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Brookland United Methodist Church Sanctuary Fund, 541 Meeting Street, West Columbia, SC 29170 or American Cancer Society, 128 Stonemark Lane, Columbia, SC 29210 or Junior Diabetes Research Foundation, 3608 Landmark Drive, Suite C, Columbia, SC 29204.

Mrs. Thornton passed away Monday, April 23, 2007. Born in Columbia, SC, she was the daughter of the late Julian Raymond and Lisbeth Cornwell Ballington. She had been a lifetime resident and was a graduate of Brookland-Cayce High School. Mrs. Thornton was a member of Brookland United Methodist Church for forty-seven years, also a member of the Weslyn Sunday school class and choir member. She served on the Pastor-Parrish Relation Committee, helped serve with MYF and was a member of the Methodist Women. She was a former kindergarten assistant at Pine View Elementary and a lifetime member of the PTA. She was also a member of Lady Shasta Garden Club and Red Hat Society Club. She was referred as Mimi by her loving grandchildren.

Surviving are her husband of 47 years, Wallace E. Thornton of West Columbia; son, Brian E. Thornton and his wife, Catherine of Lexington; daughter, Mary Lisbeth Yandle and her husband, Joseph B. Yandle, Sr. of West Columbia; six grandchildren, Joey Yandle, Jr., Meghan Yandle, Cole Thornton, Justina Thornton, Nash Thornton and Ally Yandle; brothers, Bobby Ballington of Lexington and Thomas Ray Ballington of West Columbia; and her loving pet Rascal.
