Resident of Alameda Margaret R. Luther, a resident of Alameda for over 70 years, died October 12, 2008. She was 95. Mrs. Luther was born August 20, 1913 in Reno, Nevada. She graduated from Berkeley High school in 1931 and St. Luke's Hospital Nursing School in 1933. In Berkeley, in 1935, she married Henry H. Luther, one of her former patients. Mrs. Luther worked as a nurse in San Francisco and Alameda, retiring in 1972. A fun loving and giving person, always there to help others, Margaret was an avid gardener and used to raise prize African violets. Family and friends enjoy wearing or using knit or crocheted items she made for them. In 1973, she became a Charter Member of Alameda Meals on Wheels, delivering meals for more than 30 years. Mrs. Luther volunteered for the Goodwill Thrift Shop and later joined the "Goodwill Bags" as a "Happy Hooker" putting on vintage fashion shows to raise funds for Goodwill. In 1997, Mrs. Luther was honored by Goodwill and meals on Wheels for her years of service. She also served the community by helping give flu shots for many years. She was awarded the Woman of the Year Award from the Masons in 1995, and in 1996, she received the Miriam Award from the White Shrine. She and her devoted caregiver, Mary Anderson, enjoyed daily outings to the estuary or the Berkeley Marina to feed the birds and watch the ships, and fishermen. Mrs. Luther was preceded in death by her husband, Henry and great-granddaughter, Jessica Fernandes, who had spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). She is survived by her older brother, Robert A. Rice of Danville, daughter, Marjorie Shively of Los Altos Hills, granddaughter, Linda Shively Fernandes of Sunnyvale and many cousins. Service is pending.
