a graduate of the Citadel, Captain Deutsch was killed in action at age 26. He was awarded the Silver Star, Bronze Star and Purple Heart medals.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Captain (Infantry) Henry Albert Deutsch (ASN: 0-96362), United States Army, for gallantry in action. Captain Deutsch distinguished himself by gallantry in action on 11 May 1965 while serving with the American Advisory Detachment, Song Be, Republic of Vietnam. At this time the American compound came under heavy enemy attack with Captain Deutsch being among the seriously wounded. He refused aid and made his own way to the aid station where he gave up his turn to be treated so that care could be taken of another wounded man. When the enemy threw a grenade into the aid station again wounding him, and when they were pushing a satchel charge through a window, Captain Deutsch shouted a warning and fired until his weapon became inoperable. He continued to defend his wounded comrades until mortally wounded by the Viet Cong. Captain Deutsch's conspicuous gallantry in action was in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflects great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
General Orders: Headquarters, Military Assistance Command, Vietnam, General Orders No. 1145 (May 28, 1965)
