Lemira Briggs Clark was the daughter of Robert Woolworth Clark and Calista Elizabeth Brown. She was very progressive. At 16 years of age she worked in the mills and married her boss, Samuel Franklin Penfield. She also learned how to drive an automobile which was very unusual for women of that era.
She died in St. Louis at her daughter Mabel's home.

On December 10, 1851 she married Samuel Franklin Penfield, (son of Sturgis Penfield and Laura Giddings).

This union produced five children:
*George Franklin Penfield (1852–1911)
*Charles Seymour Penfield (1854–1912)
*Edward Marlin Penfield (1857–1910)
*Robert Penfield (1867–1876)
*Mabel Stewart Penfield (1869–1964)
