María Rosa Monreal López y Sánchez was born at Alamos, Sonora, abou 1753. She married soldado Efigenio Ruíz y [ ? ] at Alamos about 1769. She accompanied her husband to Alta California as part of the 1781 Rivera expedition. Five of their eight children were born in Alta California. Eighteen months after Efigenio's death in 1795, María Rosa gave birth to José Antonio Nicolás, fathered by José Vicente Ortega y Carrillo, 20 years her junior. The two were never married. Nicolás was raised with his half siblings and assumed the surname Ruíz, which he kept for the rest of his life. María Rosa died at Los Angeles and was buried in the San Gabriel Mission Cemetery September 23, 1828 (SG Death 05371).
