Edward was born in Portland Oregon on 12 June 1921. His sister Ethel and he lived in the upstairs part of a retail, dry goods store. Their dad rented this store and with the help of their mom, they sold mostly ladies wear apparel and their dad also made clothes for women - tailored to suit individual tastes and style, with the help of their mom of course.

Edward attended Ladd & Shatttuck Grade Schools in Portland and then Benson Polytechnic High, followed by Oregon State College in Corvallis, Oregon. The family always lived in stores until their father finally bought a home after the end of World War 2.

Edward joined the Army reserve and stayed in school until graduation in 1943. He left for California to work in a aircraft factory since he had not been called for active service. The called him for service in Jan. 1944, and he served until October of 1946. He was in the Army Air Corp and attended Cadet schools for Engr. Officers. He failed to pass at Yale and was sent to Radio school next. He finally transferred to the army transportation service and got a 2nd Lt. rating at their officer's candidate school. His job was to chaperon troop trains across the country and then as a platoon leader.

After the Service, Edward went to work for United Airlines in San Francisco Airport and Met Genevieve Chin Lee through friends there. Edward married Genevieve Chin Lee on 4 May 1947 in San Francisco, California. Together they had 7 chidren.
