John was known as Jack. He grew up in Duluth, MN and around St. Paul. His father was a salesman and his mother was a homemaker. What she really was, was a social climber. His mother wanted him to become a doctor. His daughter said he would have made a good lawyer. Basically, his mother wanted him to make a lot of money. He enlisted in the military instead.

He married Adelaide in 1942 and immediately went active duty. The first two years of his daughter's life were experienced almost exclusively through pictures. The family lived in Germany in the years following WWII as the US helped Europe rebuild. Jack and Adelaide lived in different parts of the country from East Coast to West Coast. Their main stops were in Colorado, California, and Ohio. After retiring from the military in 1965 as an Air Force Colonel, he went on to have 2 more careers. Their later years were spent in Alexandria, Virginia. He finally retired for good at the age of 83.

Though born and raised a practicing Catholic, he did not become devout until his later years. He went to daily Mass for the last 2 decades of his life, and spent many years praying for others and making amends for his earlier struggles.

He enjoyed golf, photography, and traveling, especially to visit family. He was an active participant in his extended family's lives and hearts. His daughter, son-in-law, and 3 grandchildren enjoyed many holidays with Jack and Adelaide. He lived long enough to hold his great-granddaughter. He was generous with his time and money and was well-loved.
