He was born Alonzo Leonard Burnett on 24 Oct 1878 in Perryville, Indiana to his parents Robert Taffender Burnett and Anna Emma Crippen. According to WWII draft registration records, he was 5'10", and weighed 170 lbs. He had blue eyes and grey hair.

In his early years, he lived with his birth parents in Vermillion County, Indiana. Unfortunately, his mother Anna passed away suddenly in 1878. After her death, it appears his father decided to move back to Champaign County, Illinois.

However by 1880, for some unknown reason, he chose to separate his 3 children to live with different families. His brother Melvin, who was age 3 at the time, moved back with his father and lived with his Great Aunt and Uncle, John and Hanna (Burnett) Thornburn on their large farm. His oldest brother, William, who was age 6, apparently stayed with his father where they lived with their Cousin, Thomas and Fransesco Thornburn on their family farm, close to where Melvin was living with his Uncle John. Alonzo, who was only one at the time, stayed in Highland Township in Vermillion County Indiana where he lived with a Milo and Sophia Rudy.

According to census records, they eventually adopted Alonzo and he took their last name. After his marriage to Julia in 1899, they stayed in the area and lived on a farm near his adopted parents. After the death of his wife in 1932 and his remarriage, he stayed in the area until his death in 1952. He was a farmer his entire life.

He married Julia E. Lindley in May 1899 in Fountain County, Indiana. After Julia's death in 1932, he eventually married to Effie Shelton sometime between 1932 and 1940 probably in Vermillion County. It appears Alonzo and Julia had 3 children (Otha, James, Catherine). It appears he never had any children with Effie.

Alonzo was married a third time to Clara (nee James) Lee on 26 Mar 1945 in Sullivan County, Indiana. She died in 1976.

He died at the age of 73 around 18 Feb 1952 in Vermillion County, Indiana. He was buried around 21 Feb 1952 in Hicks Cemetery in Perryville, Indiana next to both his wives. (Bio provided by Tom Richardson)
