Mary Elizabeth Hodges was the daughter of Silas W Hodges and Mary Gillett. She married David Sturgis Penfield on 25 Oct 1842 in Clarendon, Vermont. She was David Sturges' sixth cousin, once removed. Their common ancestors were Nathaniel Foote and Elizabeth Deming.

After David's death Mary assumed the responsibility for managing his extensive land holdings and was an impressive business woman. In her later years, she lost most of her eyesight which didn't hinder her generosity in many areas, including donating the land for the Rockford, Illinois YMCA.

Mary & David had three children:
*Laura Penfield (1848–1878)
*Anna Frances Penfield (1853–1936)
*Mary Fuller Penfield (1859–1928)
