Edward was the son of Haswell Magruder and his wife, Charity Beall. He married on 23 Oct. 1800 to Ann Hellen who died between 1806 and 1813.

As a widower with 4 young children, he remarried in 1813 and was almost immediately serving in the 1812 war as a Pvt. in Lt. Col. George Beall's Detachment, 34th Regiment of Maryland Infantry of Prince George's Co, Md. In 1814 he was stationed at Nottingham and Upper Marlboro. He also served in Capt. Richard K. Marshall's Detachment, same regiment, stationed at Nottingham.

Edward studied in Maryland, (probably in Baltimore) and
became an Attorney.
