Robert Babb Craig

Robert Marion Babb, a longtime Craig resident, died Thursday, Aug. 5, 2011, peacefully surrounded by his family in hospice care in Grand Junction.
Robert, or Bob as everyone knew him, was a Craig native, born May 1, 1934, the son of John J. Babb, Sr., and Nell (White) Babb, who were pioneers in the early years (1923) of Moffat County.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Bernita (Bea) J. (Kugler) Babb; daughter Debra (Deb) J. Marks, of Columbia, S.C.; son John J. Babb, of Craig; grandchildren David, of Rumford, Maine, and Kelsie, of Craig; step-grandchildren Katy, Zack, Liz and Rachel; brother Earl Babb, of Grand Junction; sister Louise B. Smith, of Dalton, Ga.; and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews across the country.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John J. Babb, Sr., and Nell White Babb, and brothers John J. Babb, Jr., and William E. Babb.
Bob attended K-12 schools in Craig and Dalton, Ga., with specialized mechanic training over 37 years and the school of life. He worked in construction and mining (Union Carbide) for eight years, and served in the National Guard.
In 1963, he opened Bob's Sports Center, and he was in business for 37 years. He enjoyed retirement for 16 years while wintering in Lake Havasu, Ariz.
He was an active member of the Craig Chamber of Commerce, Elks Club, Jaycees, and founder of the Craig Motocross.
Bob enjoyed fishing, hunting, boating, camping, motorcycling, snowmobiling, four-wheeling, spending time at Freeman family cabin, travel with family.
A service took place Aug. 11, 2011, at The Journey at First Baptist in Craig. Interment followed in the Craig Cemetery.
