Their three oldest sons fought in the Civil War, and two of them died. The sons mustered in with the 15th Michigan Infantry two weeks before they fought at Shiloh, Tenn. in April 1862. John, 19, and Charles, 17, died of disease within two months of the battle. James, 21, returned home for a year, before re-enlisting as a sargeant in the 11th Michigan Cavalry, where he served until the war ended.
