Lieutenant Butz was a graduate of Bangor High School and Muhlenberg College class of 1961. At the time of his death he was serving with the Marines on a leave of absence from Bangor high School, where he taught biology and was an assistant football coach.
He drowned trying to save his men when their tank plunged into a 12-foot hole while fording a river.
He was survived by: his parents, Frank D. Butz,Sr. and Irene (Papp) Butz, his brother Frank Jr., sisters Jean Louise and Marilyn Ann, grandmother Elizabeth Butz, widow Mildred (Murphy) Butz and son Barry R.
