She inherited the title three days before her 114th birthday when a Japanese woman 6 months older then her died. (She later lost the title when a Puerto Rican woman was discovered to be 76 days older then her). She was born in Germany and at the age of 6 moved to the United States with her parents. They settled in Peekskill, New York. Charlotte met and married Karl Benkner and eventually settled in Youngstown, Ohio. She will be buried next to her husband in Peeksill, New York.
