Israel lived in the pages of American history textbooks. While courageously participating on the Patriot side of the Revolutionary War, he and his wife, Abigail, also supported the slave trade by buying and selling human lives. The two were recorded as having been quite faithful to their Christian faith. This was the paradox of both their lives and the times. Israel and Abigail died within seven months of each other.

**a. "Israel Underhill, son of (23) Nathaniel and Mary (Hunt) Underhill, was born in Westchester, N.Y., Sept. 10, 1732 ... He died Sept. 23, 1806.

b. "[Israel and Abigail] were buried in the Underhill Cemetery in Williamsbridge, N.Y., now part of New York City. They were Episcopalians and in 1795 he was a warden in St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Westchester, N.Y., and [Israel] was listed as a pewholder there in 1790."

c. " The Thirtieth and Thirty-First Annual Reports of the Underhill Society make the following statement:
"The Israel Underhill Family Burying Ground in Williamsbridge [New York], through which a street is to be cut, was incorporated through the efforts of Willard Underhill Taylor, counsel and member of the Underhill Society of America, and the ground placed on the city map as cemetery. The city bought the property and paid for it. The remains were taken up and removed to St. Paul's Churchyard in Eastchester [Mount Vernon]."
