Longtime Buffalo businessman and World War II veteran John Canfield Berlin died Saturday (Dec. 30, 2000) in Naples, Fla. He was 77.
Born in Knox, Pa., Berlin was a graduate of Lawrenceville School near Princeton, N.J., and Pennsylvania State University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in business administration.
Berlin's college education was interrupted by World War II, when he was assigned to the 15th Air Force 483rd Bombardment Group in Italy as a B-17 navigator. His first mission was July 18, 1944, to Menninger, Germany. Of the 26 B-17 bombers in his squadron that were dispatched, 14 never returned to base.
Berlin completed 50 missions and stayed on at the 483rd Bombardment Headquarters. At the end of the war, he returned to Penn State and finished his college education.
Berlin owned and managed many commercial office buildings in Buffalo. He served for several years as the president of the New York State and Pennsylvania chapter of the Building Owners and Managers Association, a national and international business organization. He also served on the Buffalo Planning Board, including for several years as chairman.
He became a Florida resident in 1986. Upon his departure from Buffalo, he was honored with the title of chairman emeritus of the Greater Buffalo Building Owners and Managers Association and an honorary life member of the national organization for his contributions.
After moving to Naples, Berlin was instrumental in organizing the Gulfshore Condominium Association. He served as president of the association for more than a decade until he resigned in May 1999. He was also active in many civic and political organizations in the Naples area.
Berlin was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Naples, Royal Poinciana Golf Club, Imperial Golf Club in Naples and the Cherry Hill Club in Ridgeway, Ont.
He is survived by his wife of 51 years, Marjorie; a daughter, Joanne Cook of Buffalo; a son, Stephen Caldwell of Wellesley, Mass.; and three grandchildren.
A memorial service will be scheduled. Burial will be in Arlington (Va.) National Cemetery
