Maurine Agnes Beekly, age 102 of Mangum, Oklahoma, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at Grace Living Center in Mangum.

Maurine was born October 24, 1911 near Jester, Oklahoma to Marshall G. and Minnie Grace (Lehman) Paxton. She graduated from Eastview High School and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southwestern State Teachers College in Weatherford, Oklahoma. She taught in Oklahoma and Arkansas public schools and also did post graduate study at Oklahoma A & M College in Stillwater, Oklahoma and at the College of the Pacific in Stockton, California. She spent several years in secretarial work during World War II for the American Red Cross and in the physical therapy section of the Army and Naval General Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas and also later in medical clinics.

In 1945 Maurine married Emerson K. Beekly in Hot Springs, Arkansas and they were married for over 51 years before his death in 1996. Emerson was a Geologist and a college professor. They lived in several states and the province of Alberta, Canada and they moved from Florida to Mangum in 1978. Maurine was member the Dorcas Sunday School Class at the First Baptist Church in Mangum.

Preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Evelyn Peevy; Alice Hinds; and Ruth Suffridge; one brother, Marshall H. Paxton; one niece, Naomi Heatly; one nephew Dale Peevey; Maurine is survived by one niece, LaVerne Fails of Raleigh, North Carolina; and one nephew, Derald Suffridge and his wife Linda of Duncan, Oklahoma and niece-in-law Jane Peevey of Ontario, California.

Graveside services will be 2:00 pm, Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at Jester Cemetery with Chaplin Erin Martinez officiating under the direction of Greer Funeral Home-Mangum.
